The Kaiguri washing mill is located in the Kenyan region of Nyeri, right on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Together with the neighbouring region Kirinyaga, Nyeri is known for its intense, complex, and flavour-dense coffees. That is exactly what we experience in Kaiguri AA. Delightful, bright and juicy notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and gooseberry.
As typical in Kenya, Kaiguri works with a cooperative model. This means there is a group of self-employed farmers who each grow their own coffee. After picking the ripest and highest quality coffee cherries, the farmers then sell directly to the wet mill for processing into the green coffee that Prolog receives. The smallholder farmers delivering cherries to the Kaiguri mill have an average of 250 coffee trees each. Other crops grown are maize, bananas and beans, in order to diversify the growing environment and provide supplementary income for the farmers.
The farmers work together with Kaiguri and government agencies, which provide support and training. This not only results in a higher quality final cup of coffee, but that quality can be reflected in price paid back to the wet mill and the individual farmers, helping to promote financial sustainability for the industry.
We have omni-roasted this lot, which means it can be preferred just as well as filter coffee, or as espresso.
